Digital Train Control Technical Advisory Services

Set to transform travel across South East Queensland, the Cross River Rail project is delivering a new 10.2km rail line and 5.9km twin tunnels running under the Brisbane River and CBD. This includes the provision of European Train Control System (ETCS) technology as the critical core for safe signalling and train control to achieve the vision for a turn-up-and-go transport system.

PT&I have been engaged to provide strategic and technical support and advice to the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority’s ETCS project team, ensuring that the system design, including ETCS, Signalling, the GSM-R/GPRS Digital Radio System and the Traffic Management System, complies with the prescribed Scope & Performance Requirements as well as all applicable technical specifications and standards. Key areas of our support have been focused on:

  • providing strategic technical support to the implementation of lessons learned from worldwide ETCS and other equivalent Digital Train Control projects;
  • resolving technical issues relating to complex interdependencies between systems and subsystems, including providing an integrated people, process and technology lens in ‘best for program’ decision-making;
  • applying best-practice approaches to type approval, assurance, approval and acceptance of complex, software-based, integrated railway systems.

To ensure the best value outcomes from specialist technical resources, we used a risk-based approach to focus our technical knowledge and industry experience and provide targeted advice in collaboration with the client team. This helped the Delivery Authority navigate a changing regulatory environment around critical infrastructure, and manage the emerging challenges of complex technology implementation.
